Part of the 2012 Mongoose Metrics Data Series found that mobile internet access accounts for approximately 9 percent of all traffic. However, the report also found that about 10 percent of websites are fully optimized for mobile access, which means 90 percent are incapable of serving these users completely.
Ensuring that a website is accessible to smartphone and tablet users is increasingly important, with these markets set to grow rapidly in the coming years. As these devices become less expensive and more capable, users turn to them for more tasks.
Mongoose found that websites not optimized for mobile users run the risk of losing traffic as the increasingly large mobile audience looks to find information quickly. Brafton recently reported that 44 percent of all mobile phones currently in use are smartphones, while tablets are owned by about 23 percent of all American internet users.
The report from Mongoose Metrics revealed, however, that businesses have made some progress, with twice as many websites optimized for mobile use compared to data from last year’s report.
Brafton reported last week that 62 percent of searches for restaurants on Valentine’s Day came from mobile devices. Businesses with poor mobile websites may have missed opportunities to attract new prospects looking for information from their smartphones or tablets on this day.
